Traditional & Five Element Acupuncture by Lisa Woolhouse BSc (Hons) LicAc

Traditional acupuncture has its roots in Chinese medicine, and can be traced back nearly 2000 years. It aims to achieve good health & function by looking at pain & illness as signs that the body’s energy flow is out of balance, and correcting any imbalances by inserting fine sterile needles at specific acupuncture points. It looks at physical, mental & emotional health as one.

Five Element Acupuncture is a further development of the technique which regards each individual human as being made up of a balance of 5 elements. These elements make up not just humans but the whole environment, so the treatment aims to balance the individual as part of this whole.

The techniques are often used to help with anxiety & depression, arthritis, back pain, headaches / migraines, asthma, high blood pressure, period problems, and are also used by people to help with addictions and eating disorders.

As with Chiropractic and other ‘whole body’ therapies, the initial consultation involves taking a full history of any previous problems and treatments, a thorough examination, details of emotional well-being and sleep disturbances, and also details of likes & dislikes.

Treatment is based on using very fine needles to stimulate acupuncture points. Surprisingly inserting the needles is not usually painful, though a sensation of tingling or buzzing is thought to mean that the body is responding.

A first consultation may take 60-80 minutes, and follow-ups take 30-40 minutes.

Lisa’s acupuncture is based at the Cheltenham Holistic Health Centre, but she is also able to see patients of BackWellSoon.
